Ad spending up 6.8% in 1st half
TNS Media Intelligence/CMR says spending hit $61.6 bil, with more than half going to TV. All of the new TV spending went to cable, which grew 17% over last year. Network TV had a slight decline. Internet advertising and Spanish TV saw gains of more than 15% each. Local newspapers and magazines grew 11%, but national papers grew just 1%.
Bronfman's Vivendi bid doomed?
That what some of his own backers think as he makes a last-ditch try for Vivendi's U.S. entertainment assets. Many see GE-owned NBC as the favorite, and suspect Vivendi is keeping Bronfman's bid alive to gain more concessions. Bronfman, whose family sold Universal to Vivendi in '00, hopes offering upfront cash sways the debt-addled firm.
Yes Network sues AOL TW unit
The New York Yankees' cable channel said it sued Time Warner Cable for breach of contract. It's the first legal response since the AOL Time Warner unit in July decided to let 11 mil cable subscribers opt out of paying for the Yes channel, co-owned by YankeeNets and Goldman Sachs. The dispute is similar to a yearlong battle with Cablevision.
