Trimmed-down McDonnell studies office space needs

McDonnell Douglas Corp. -- which is in the process of cutting 10,000 jobs in St. Louis, about a quarter of its work force here -- is still working on a plan to deal with excess office space.

The company's extra office space has come as a result of McDonnell's initial 5,200 layoffs last summer, almost all of them in the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co. which employs 29,700. The company had employed 40,500 here before the cuts. In December the company announced a second round of cuts: 5,000 jobs related to the A-12 advanced tactical aircraft project.
