"Prospective, systematic studies of the pathophysiology and prognosis of premenopausal women vs. young men who suffer an acute myocardial infarction (MI) and are treated with direct angioplasty are scarce. A total of 782 consecutive and unselected patients who presented with an acute ST-elevation MI within 12 hours of symptom onset underwent immediate angiography to guide direct angioplasty. Using this therapeutic approach clinical characteristics, angiographic observations, and short- and long-term prognosis were analyzed in a subgroup of 31 premenopausal women and compared to 192 young men with acute MI," scientists in Germany said.
