2003 SEP 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- AstraZeneca announced that patient recruitment has begun on an important new trial involving its novel estrogen receptor antagonist, "Faslodex" (fulvestrant).

The trial, called EFECT, is designed to answer one of the most important questions emerging in the treatment of breast cancer- which hormonal therapy will provide the best outcome for postmenopausal patients with early or advanced breast cancer whose disease has recurred or progressed on treatment with a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (AI)? With the results of the ATAC trial leading the way for the adjuvant use of Arimidex (anastrozole) in postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive early disease, this question is becoming increasingly important.

The EFECT study will compare the efficacy and safety of fulvestrant with exemestane - a steroidal AI - in postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer which has recurred or progressed on prior non-steroidal AI therapy. EFECT is an international trial that will involve between 100-150 centers in Europe, North and South America, as well as other countries around the World.

The EFECT trial is the first randomized comparative trial of two drugs in patients whose disease has relapsed on prior non-steroidal AI. Previous randomized trials in postmenopausal women with recurrent or progressive disease have been in post-tamoxifen failures, so this new trial reflects the changing treatment paradigm and the increasing acceptance of anastrozole as adjuvant therapy and the use of both anastrozole and other AIs for advanced disease.

Speaking of the need for studies such as EFECT, William ...
