2003 SEP 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Breast cancer screening should be encouraged by general practitioners.
"Achieving and maintaining a high rate of attendance for screening and two-yearly rescreening is essential for the success of the BreastScreen Australia program," scientists in Australia report.
"A low participation rate will result in fewer breast cancer-related deaths being prevented," wrote H.M. Zorbas and colleagues, National Breast Cancer Center.
"Results of two recent large randomized trials do not show that a systematic approach to breast self examination finds breast cancers early or impacts survival," the researchers stated.
The researchers concluded: "'Breast awareness' and the prompt reporting of breast symptoms are important early detection messages for women of all ages.
