District's Wage Protests Go On The Santa Fe Public Schools administration called the absence of all teachers at Carlos Gilbert Elementary School Monday a sickout.

But the school's acting principal, Theresa Alarid, differed with that terminology, which implies the teachers skipped school in protest to a proposed education budget.

"Oh, not necessarily," she said. "What they do on their personal time is their business."

She refused to say how many teachers had taken personal leave or how many substitutes had replaced them. "I'm not sure I need to give that information out," the principal-in-training said.

School Principal Genevieve Gomez has been on personal leave since Wednesday, she said.

The usual number of students were in attendance Monday in the kindergarten through sixth-grade school on Griffin Street, she said.

"All kids are each in their own class, and exciting learning is going on," Alarid said.
