East Mountains and Estancia Valley students will be returning to school in the next few weeks, and some of them will find new buildings waiting for their use.
A new middle school will open its doors in Edgewood, and a new charter high school and a renovated elementary school are getting the finishing touches in the East Mountains. Estancia and Mountainair are getting new gymnasiums and other renovated facilities.
Construction of most of these projects has been under way for more than a year, and most are scheduled to be ready for students when school starts.
The $7.2 million Edgewood Middle School was built on state-owned land off N.M. 344 and Venus Road. The Moriarty Municipal School District is leasing the 40-acre site from the state Land Office for about $5,000 a year.
About 400 students will attend the new school.
