Despite a final-round 286, the University of New Mexico men's golf team could manage no better than a sixth-place finish Thursday in the 2000 Toby Cup, 14 strokes off the pace.
The Japanese team Tohoku Fukushi won the combined U.S. and Japanese event at the Tanagura Country Club in the Fukushima Prefecture near Tokyo. New Mexico shot a 15-over 879.
The Lobos were led by Kevin Price, who finished 10th with a two-over 217, followed by Joel Hendry, who recovered from a disappointing first round with a pair of rounds below-par to finish 18th with a six-over 221.
Following a day of sightseeing in Japan, the team returns home to get ready to host the William H. Tucker Invitational next weekend at the UNM Championship Course. It's the only home tournament New Mexico will play this season.
MEN'S SOCCER: The Lobos are recovering from their worst start to a season under coach Klaus Weber. No prior New Mexico squad had been shut out in back-to-back games to open the season until UNM lost to Notre Dame and Ohio State last weekend.
Today, UNM has a chance to get in the scoring column with a match against nationally ranked Southwest Missouri State.
