Net Bandwidth Dilemma A new light has appeared on the Internet processor scene. As the Internet spreads, it's creating demand for more bandwidth - the ability to transmit a lot of data quickly. One answer is fiber-optic networks that quickly carry large amounts of data via lightwaves over thin glass strands, or fibers. SDL Inc. makes chips for these optical networks. It's such a hot market that the company says its record first-quarter results exceeded its expectations. It reported a per-share profit of 22 cents a share vs. 8 cents in the year-ago period.
