Bush team disputes news reports,
will push for school voucher plan
President-elect George Bush has said his first legislative priority will be education reform, including a plan to give some parents vouchers to help them send their children to private schools. Bush transition spokesman Ari Fleischersaid the president-elect will stand by the voucher plan. He denied a Washington Post report that the plan was likely to be dropped. Vouchers are sup
ported by Republicans and many religious groups. But many Democrats and the nation's powerful teachers unions oppose them.

The meeting on Wednesday and Thursday in Austin, Texas, will be closed to the press. It's designed to let President-elect George Bush hear at firsthand how the economy is doing from the likes of General Electric Chairman Jack Welch andWal-Mart Stores Inc. Chief Executive Lee Scott. Two of the men charged with carrying out Bush's economic agenda - Treasury Secretary-designate Paul O'Neilland Don Evans, Bush's nominee for commerce secretary - will stay in Washingtonbecause of potential congressional action on their nominations. Both appointments must be confirmed by the Senate.
