What a difference a year makes.
Last winter, as the year 2000 dawned, it looked like America's economic expansion would roll on forever. The Internet seemed chock-full of endless moneymaking possibilities, and biotech firms were poised to capitalize on mysteries of the human genome.
But rather than gallop on forever, the longest bull market in history morphed into the longest bear market in more than a generation. And
by the end of the year, those old bricks-and-mortar businesses that seemed staid and passe just a few months earlier looked safe and appealing.
So how did we get from there to here?
