The Real Most Active
On the last trading day of 2000, techs followed the same path they took for most of the year - downward.
The Nasdaq composite dropped 87.24 points, or 3.4%, to 2470.52. For the year, the index fell 39.3%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 5%, to 2341.70. Volume grew 15% to 2.53 billion shares.
Chipmakers took the road south Friday. Applied Micro Circuits shed 2 25/64 to 75 3/64 on nearly triple its typical trade. The telecom-chip maker
is moving above both its 50- and 200-day moving averages, but is 31% off its high. Microsemi sank 2 9/16 to 27 13/16, closing at its session low. The maker of analog and mixed-signal chips ended a four-day winning streak on nearly double normal volume.
SEI Investments hit a new high intraday but reversed, closing down 11 7/16 to 112. The maker of investment software snapped a five-day winning streak on nearly two times its usual trade.
MapInfo reached a new high but couldn't hold on, slipping 3 15/16 to 47 1/4 on above-average volume. But the mapping and data software firm closed up for the week, gaining 10%.
