The millennium came in with a bang, but it didn't go out with a whimper. The year 2000 was an unusually eventful year, one that's not likely to recede gently into the mists of history.
Just like any other year, there were events that stood out from the others - events that are likely, with the test of time, to prove memorable in themselves.
Elian. Dimpled chads. Y2K. Genome. Lots of words entered our national vocabula
ry for the first time in 2000 - or at least impinged on the public's consciousness for the first time. Some of the words will disappear as promptly as they arose. Others will stay with us forever.
That's the purpose here: to review the things that happened in the past year that will continue to have meaning and relevance. The things that are important. The really big news.
