When Trace Jones bought a Palm hand-held computer recently, he joined millions of other consumers who in 2000 helped make personal digital assistants the latest must-have technology.
The rapid rise of PDAs comes at a time when personal-computer sales have cooled. Hand-held computers, especially those using Palm Inc.'s operating system, were one of the bright spots this Christmas season, which saw shopp
ers turn more thrifty.
Like other new Palm buyers, Jones wanted a PDA to help organize his complicatedlife.
"I bought a Palm because of the hectic days I usually have," said Jones, a database systems administrator for an oil company in Houston. "With so many meetings to remember, the Palm is great to have."
