The Conference Board index fell to 75 from October's reading of 79 and from 85 in November 1999. Fewer ads in U.S. newspapers are the result of the cooler economy and lower demand for workers, analysts said. "The latest readings on want-ad volume suggest that there will be no quick return to the earlier strongpace. Hiring could soften in the first half of 2000," said the board's Ken Goldstein.
