Microsoft Corp. is preparing a hard sell for its new personal computer operating system, Windows XP, set for release later this year.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant needs a compelling sales pitch to get consumers interested in switching to the splashy new PC system. Microsoft officials can list the advantages of Windows XP. But whether those are convincing enough to make large numbers of users change is uncertain.

Microsoft strengthened its case by enlisting the support of major PC makers last month at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. Then, on April 3, itannounced a promotion with retailers who will put "Designed for Windows XP" logos on select hardware and software in the 2001 holiday season.
