Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co., seeking to avoid charges of deceptive advertising, agreed to drop claims that some hand-held computers come with "built-in" wireless Internet access, the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday.
A joint advertising campaign for HP's pocket computers that use a Microsoft operating system said they came with "built-in wireless access to the Internet and e-mail at any time and from anywhere," the FTC said.
Additional Equipment Needed
But the ads launched in April 2000 failed to mention that Jornada users needed to buy additional equipment such as modems, the agency said.
Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement, and spokesmen for the companies said they never received any consumer complaints about the ads.
The advertising campaign was part of efforts to contest Palm Inc.'s dominance of the hand-held computer market with the theme of "Can your Palm do that?"
