Amazon.com Inc. an applications service provider?

Analysts say that to survive, Amazon, the largest Web-based retailer, must continue to "lend" its electronic software, or applications, as part of partnerships with offline retailers.

That's what the company first did last summer, when it teamed up with Toys RUs Inc.

Amazon is talking with consumer electronics retailer Best Buy Co. about a partnership similar to the one with Toys R Us, several analysts say.

Also, several months ago Amazon confirmed that it has talked with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's largest retailer. According to people in the industry, those talks have at least temporarily ended.
