Senate Democrats began a lengthy assault on President Bush's economic plans Tuesday by attempting to trim his $1.6 trillion tax cut to provide for a larger Medicare prescription drug benefit than Republicans areseeking.

The amendment by Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Bob Graham, D-Fla., was the first of several expected Democratic attempts to alter the GOP's $1.94 trillionbudget for 2002, which sets the course for Bush's 10-year tax cut and holds next year's spending increases to 4%, half of last year's increase.

Baucus, ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, sought to shift about $158 billion from the tax cut to add to the $153 billion Medicare drug benefit requested by Bush, providing a total of $311 billion over 10 years for seniors' prescriptions.

"A large tax cut is an important priority, but so is the health and welfare of our senior citizens," Baucus said.

A vote on the amendment was possible later Tuesday.
