California Gov. Gray Davis says his state's middle-schoolers aren't doing well enough in school. That's what the state's standardized tests show, anyway.
But Davis has a plan: have them spend even more time in school -- six weeks more, which would just about cut their summer vacation in half.
Davis isn't alone in his thinking. New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani wants kids doing badly in school to spend Saturdays in class. Georgia Gov. Roy Barneswants some middle schools to try holding classes eight hours a day.
Critics say it's not how much time kids spend in school, it's how the time is spent. There's also the question of extra cost.
But to some government officials, making kids work more seems a logical step.
