China Keeps Plane, Crew As Bush Demands Return
1Despite President Bush's demand for immediate access to the 24 crew membersand plane, China indicated nothing would happen before Tuesday night. "I am troubled by the lack of a timely response to our request," Bush said. He demanded release of the EP-3 patrol plane that was forced to land in China after colliding with a Chinese fighter jet. It's packed with top-secret eavesdropping equipment. After the plane landed, the crew sent a message that Chinese soldiers were boarding.

2Earnings worries continued to plague the market as the second quarter got under way. Tension over China didn't help. Traders knocked the Nasdaq down to its lowest point since October 1998, shaving off another 3.1%. An earnings warning from American Express helped trim 1% off the Dow. The S&P 500 fell 1.3%. Chip stocks took some of the heaviest hits, with Semtech, Applied Materials and Novellus Systems falling more than 8%. In the oil patch, Halliburton, Noble Drilling and Cooper Cameron gave up at least 5.5%.More on A20
