Twelve of the world's biggest ocean freight lines are sailing under one cyberflag.
They're members of a consortium called GT Nexus. The carriers on Monday wereset to announce that they'd joined forces with an application service providerto set up a Web portal to get their complex paperwork -- needed to move cargo on the world's waterways -- online.
The ocean freighters have teamed up with an Alameda, Calif., service provider, formerly Tradiant Inc. but now part of the GT Nexus consortium, to form a transportation network of carriers and shippers doing business through its portal.
GT Nexus hopes to make its money from transaction fees the different shipping lines, the carriers, pay when their customers use its portal to smooththe process of shipping goods.
The carriers are eager to set sail in the new economy world. They plan to save money by making their slow-moving industry speed up a few knots.
