A tidal wave of data is flooding online computer systems, drowning executives in a sea of information. As a result, e-business survival is a sink-or-swim affair.
Many companies use analytics software to make better decisions based on datathey've gathered from internal computers and e-business systems. E-metrics software is a type of analytics used to track Web site traffic patterns.
E-metrics systems help companies understand the factors related to Web site success, including product positioning, prices and site navigation. Firms then can tailor their messages to bolster Web sales.
Software and consulting firm NetGenesis Corp. of Cambridge, Mass. has published a research paper on e-metrics. Matt Cutler, co-founder and chief e-business intelligence officer of NetGenesis, says industry standards are lacking because the e-metrics field is still evolving. (For related stories, see page A6.)
