Winery Auctions Go Virtual

In vino veritas, quoth Pliny the Elder, but he never had to deal with onlinetrading exchanges.

Even the long-established wine industry has climbed aboard the e-business bandwagon. The first-ever online auction of premium grapes was held in California's wine country on March 20. WineryExchange, a private firm based in Novato, Calif., hosted the auction of ultrapremium grapes from 80 different vineyard lots. The auction involved 30 vineyard sellers and 31 winery buyers.

WineryExchange spokeswoman Kristen Fairchild says software from Moai Technologies Inc. was used to create the auction platform. More than 2,000 tonsof grapes were sold from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Monterey counties, and on California's central coast.

Doug Wilson, director of grower relations for Fetzer Vineyards, says winery officials visited the vineyards before the auction to inspect dormant vines that will be picked for 2001 vintages in the upcoming fall harvest. He added that a lot of companies "stayed on ...
