It was the winter of 1993, and Jack In The Bo
x Inc. chairman and CEO Bob Nugent faced the worst crisis of his career.
More than 500 diners fell ill at Jack In The Box shops in Washington State, Idaho and Nevada. They had eaten undercooked hamburger meat tainted with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria. Four children died.
The media had a field day. Lawsuits from customers, stockholders and even franchisees piled up at the company's front door. Store traffic nearly ground to a halt.
But Nugent had figured out just what to do, and he could sum it up with one word: empathy.
