The Web-hosting market is undergoing big changes, says Qwest Communications International Inc. Conditions now favor a service provider that owns a fast communications network.
That just happens to be Qwest's strength. So it's gunning for Exodus, the Web-hosting leader, and Akamai, which speeds the delivery of Web pages over theInternet.
Qwest has the experience and offerings to handle the large old-line companies that, as opposed to Internet firms, are emerging as the biggest usersof Web-hosting services, says Rick Weston, senior vice president of Internet solutions for Qwest.
"The model has changed," he said. "The early dot-com environment was a simplistic opportunity. Now the tough sledding is with enterprise accounts."
