The Nasdaq got a needed shove into positive territory Thursday after good news about NYSE-traded IBM led techs upwards.
The Nasdaq composite dropped as low as 4% intraday before gaining 31.54 points,or 1.5%, to 2183.37. The Nasdaq 100 added 3.1% to 1968.02. Volume swelled 8% to 2.25 billion shares.
DuPont Photomasks surged 8.56 to 74.50 on nearly double normal trade. The makerof glass plates used by chipmakers moved abov
e its 50-day moving average after falling below it Wednesday.
Fellow chip equipment maker KLA-Tencor gapped down in early morning trading butrecovered, closing up 3.69 to 39.44 on above-average turnover. On Thursday, Goldman Sachs lowered fiscal 2001 and 2002 earnings per share estimates for thechip-testing products firm. The stock popped back above its 50-day, but is still below its 200-day moving average.
HNC Software soared 6.44 to 29.75 on two times typical volume. Late Wednesday, Sears, Roebuck & Co. said it's successfully using HNC's software for its creditcard automation. The stock moved above its 50-day line, coming within 15% of its high.
