Even if he doesn't win on school choice -- and you can't count him out yet -- President Bush seems close to getting just about everything he wants in his education reforms.
For a president who took office with "no mandate," as the media mantra went, getting a whole loaf minus a slice or two on his top priority isn't half bad.
A letter to Bush this week from 25 centrist Democrats in Congress suggests how much philosophical ground the president already has gained.
The group (including Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh and other "New Democrats") hada short list of concerns about Bush's plan. Most of these had to do with funding.
The Democrats want more money for schools serving low-income students, and they want states to have less leeway in deciding how the funds are spent.
