Thrill rides aren't for everybody. Just ask Aram Keith.
Back in the mid-1990s, his engineering firm, Keith Cos., had just been through a brutal downturn in the California real estate market. He decided it was time to look for something smoother.
While Keith Cos. still does plenty of survey and design work for California land developers and builders, it's been steadily widening its scope into new markets and regions. A handful of the markets it's entered are hitting on all cylinders.
One is power generation. Keith has added mechanical, electrical and other industrial engineering services to its lineup. The move is paying off in energy-starved California and other states, where the company is doing design and engineering work on new power plants.
In December it added eight engineers -- a 20% hike -- to handle the extra load. Its Engineering Services unit is working on seven small plants with 50-megawatt gas turbine generators.
