Fearing that movies will be shared over the Internet as readily as music is today, Hollywood studios are moving toward ways for consumers to pay for videosthey download to their personal computers or set-top boxes.
Hollywood already is losing business to video pirates and is playing catch-up, says Scott Sander, president and chief executive of SightSound Technologies Inc.
The Mount Lebanon, Pa., company is one of the leaders in the emerging business of selling movies for download over the Net.
"The steepness of the (adoption) curve has been startling," Sander said. "Ofcourse, we're well behind the piracy numbers, but that's to be expected, because we don't have the big blockbuster movies yet."
Internet consulting firm Viant Corp. of Boston estimates that 350,000 to 400,000 feature-length movies are downloaded from the Internet each day.
