A staple in American shopping malls is the sneaker store, a place where teens and other fashion-conscious consumers can grab a pair of whatever athletic apparel happens to be trendy.
Hibbett Sporting Goods Inc., an Alabama retailer, has figured out what rivals Champs Sports and Foot Locker often ignore: Consumers in small towns are just as brand-savvy and Timberland-needy as their suburban contemporaries.
Analysts say
that's the secret behind Hibbett, a 280-store chain that sells athletic footwear and apparel as well as equipment for team sports such as basketball, football, baseball and soccer.
"Their performance goes against what the mall-based specialty chains have done," said John Shanley, analyst at Wells Fargo Van Kasper. "In the last 18 months, stores like Foot Locker have had abysmal apparel offerings. Conversely,Hibbett's been very strong and driven by a renewed interest in team apparel."
