When California's Lights Go Out,
Energy-Tech Firms Get Spotlight
Although the landscape looks bleak for many tech firms these days, California'senergy crunch opens doors for others. Companies that tout technologies to improve electricity production have a chance to shine, says Mark Mills, co-editor of industry newsletter "The Digital Power Report."
Capstone Turbine Corp., Infineon Technologies AG and American Superconductor Corp. could be promi
sing tech investments, Mills says. That's because they and others like them aredeveloping components capable of faster, more reliable electricity production.
Mills says investors often overlook energy-tech firms, which have the potentialto prop up the overworked power grid. "Electric power is more important to theU.S. economy than oil. Oil is vital; kilowatt hours are more important," Millssaid.
Indeed, none of the companies he mentions are doing much in the market. Mills, though, touts all of them as having the same potential Intel Corp. had 15 yearsago.
