Will the dot-com world ever wear the union label?

Last fall, months before January's layoffs of 1,300 people at Amazon.com, a group of employees there began efforts toward unionization in earnest.

A similar project got under way at San Francisco-based ETown.com, a consumer electronics site run by Collaborative Media Inc.

Union organizers say the Internet climate invites their efforts, what with company failures, long

hours and layoffs. Stock options no longer guarantee tech workers a ticket to the good life.
