Juno plans 'virtual supercomputer'
by tapping users' processing power
Juno Online Services wants subscribers to leave their computers on 24 hours a day so it can sell the excess processing power and hard drive space to researchinstitutions and businesses. This "distributed computing" is done on a volunteer basis by astronomy buffs supporting the search for extraterrestrial life. It's the latest effort by Juno to make its free Internet service p
ay off. Juno says the plan will be voluntary at first, but may make it mandatory for free ISP customers. It says the plan shouldn't slow subscribers' computers.
