Coke's net rises 23%, sales dip
The world's leading soft drink firm earned 38 cents a share in its fourth quarter vs. 31 cents a year ago. Coca-Cola met estimates, thanks to strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region. But overall sales fell 1% to $4.9 billion asNorth American volume languished. Coke expects currency changes to continue tohurt earnings. But it remains comfortable with 2001 profit and volume forecasts.
Philip Morris 4th qtr falls
short
Philip Morris earned 87 cents a share, up 13% from 77 cents a year ago. That missed views by a penny. The tobacco firm said it sees 2001 earnings growth of 13%-15%. But it said the strong dollar could hurt results. Philip Morris acquired Nabisco Holdings last month, adding well-known brands such as Oreo cookies and Ritz crackers.
