The market got shaken up, but closed positive after the Federal Reserve loweredthe discount rate by a half point Wednesday.
The Dow industrials fell as low as 10,834.50 intraday before closing up 6.16 points, or 0.1%, to 10,887.36. The S&P 500 lost 0.6% to 1366.01. Volume swelled13% to 1.30 billion shares.
On the upside, a number of retailers rallied higher. Out of the top 10 performing industries Wednesday, five of them
were retailers.
Discount retailers were the best performing group Wednesday. BJ's Wholesale Club soared 3.44 to 42.75 on double daily volume. Target added 1.48 to 37.98 onnearly two times typical trade. Both stocks are featured in today's "NYSE Stocks In The News."
Linens 'n Things gapped up 2.77 to 35.76 on triple usual turnover. The home andhousewares retailer said fourth-quarter earnings rose 20%, narrowly missing estimates by a penny.
