The telecommunications boom that echoed in the first half of 2000 seems a distant memory. Many in the sector are strapped with lower projected sales and earnings growth over the next few quarters.

Spending on telecom gear is expected to increase 15% to 20% this year, analystssay. That's down from the estimated 40% jump in 2000 and 33% increase of 1999.
