Irwin Jacobs is a poster child of sorts for laptop security.
The chief executive of San Diego-based Qualcomm Corp. made news last year when someone swiped his laptop computer at a conference. The computer contained sensitive data.
Jacobs' problem is not unique. In 1999 alone, more than 300,000 laptop computers were stolen in the U.S., up 48% from 1998. That's according to Safeware Inc., a Columbus, Ohio, insurer that
specializes in computers.
The firm, which insures one of every 1,000 personal computers in the U.S., creates annual estimates of computer losses based on client claims. Safeware valued the laptops stolen in 1999 at $900 million.
