After a strong start of the week, blue chips faltered Wednesday.

The Dow industrials fell 68.32 points, or 0.6%, to 10,584.34. The S&P 500 beganthe day strong but slowly slid before barely closing up 0.2% to 1329.47. Volume swelled 12% to 1.34 billion shares.

3M was the heaviest-hit Dow component Wednesday. The diversified manufacturing firm plunged 3 1/2 to 110 on double daily volume. The stock touched its 50-day moving

average intraday but managed to close above the line. Late Tuesday, the firm warned fourth-quarter profit would miss estimates due to slowing U.S. growth and a strong dollar.
