Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell declined Wednesday to compromise on the agency's new media ownership rules despite mounting public and political opposition to the regulations.

"The new media merger rules are not on the table," Powell said in a press conference Wednesday, Aug. 20, to preview the FCC's fall agenda.

Powell also rejected a request by critics who want the agency to delay implementing the media rules until lawmakers decide whether to scale them back. Companies need clarity on whether they can make acquisitions, he said. The rules take effect Sept. 4.
