Inspired by a young Ford fan

Dutch Mandel's stirring column on Fred Diem (July 28) elicited emotions (including tears) plus the strong feeling that I missed something by not knowing him. Kudos to him for his passionate focus on something he loved and kudos to you for bringing it to us in 10 paragraphs.

Tex Guthrie, via e-mail

Thank you for sharing the story of Fred Diem. I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it, and I'm a 56-year-old retired cop. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Your column gives us a lot to think about on different levels, and it shows that there are some really good people who have hearts as big as all outdoors.

Bernie Guinta, via e-mail

Lambo's baby makes a fuss

I read your July 28 cover story on the new "baby'' Lamborghini with great interest. And no, it's not the best new supercar in the world. With 1200 units a year, it's hardly more exclusive than a Viper (at about 1400 units a year). It is slower than a Viper, and twice the price. We who buy these cars buy speed and exclusivity.
