After that little encounter with the law just after taking delivery of our long-term Nissan 350Z (AW, May 26), our time behind the wheel can be summed up in a word: fun. The religious nature of some of the comments on the car drives that point home: "The engine note is pure heaven,'' "That rare balance I pray for in a road car,'' "It's a joy to blast through the winding roads out past Hell [Michigan] and beyond'' and "If ever a car embodied the driving spirit...''
As you can see, we have few qualms with the Z's performance. The V6 engine is quick, the power is smooth, there's great grip, the brakes are fantastic and the steering and suspension are spot-on. Like the Cooper S but for different reasons, the Z is the most thrilling of our long-term cars.
But after three months in the fleet, what bothers us most is what we knew from the outset-the quality of the Z's interior. We expect more in a $35,000 sports car than some of the flimsy bits holding it together.
