AT THE HEIGHT of the "All history is present history" controversy in the middle of the last century, American historian John Hexter commented that far from viewing the past in terms of current events, he interpreted current events in terms of the Puritan-Cavalier conflicts of seventeenth-century Britain. I feel much the same about the controversies over the war in Iraq. The "embedding" of reporters reminds me of Damien Parer, Chester Wilmot and Ernie Pyle. The United States' attempts to intimidate journalists into reporting the war their way echo for me Sir Thomas Blamey's clash with Chester Wilmot--but of course, even Blamey didn't lob a tank-shell in Wilmot's direction. ...
