Zanardi comeback?
Two-time CART champion Alex Zanardi could return to racing in the European Touring Car Championship. The Italian, who lost both his legs in a crash at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in 2001, tested an ETCC BMW 320i. A possible race in the final round of the series at Monza in October hasn't been ruled out. Zanardi drove a 260-hp BMW fitted with hand controls at both the Adria and Misano circuits in Italy. He lapped the latter venue within four seconds of ETCC champion Fabrizio Giovanardi. "Times were not my priority,'' said Zanardi. "We focused on setting up the system [of hand controls] to give me total control of the car. We have more tests planned, and only when I feel confident will I go for times.''
No Hornish for Penske
Sam Hornish Jr.'s contract with Panther Racing expires at the end of the season, and he said he will decide his future sometime this month. If Roger Penske is telling the truth, the 24-year-old sensation won't be heading to Team Penske as rumored. "I am absolutely not running three cars next year,'' Penske said. "We'll have the same sponsor [Marlboro] and the same two drivers [Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves].'' Penske said he has been impressed with Hornish's driving, particularly during these difficult days with the underpowered Chevrolet engine, but he isn't ready to say Hornish is better than de Ferran and Castroneves, who have won the past three Indianapolis 500s.
