Novell buys Linux software maker
The enterprise software firm bought Ximian, a private developer of Linux software, which is one of the main alternatives to Microsoft. Novell said the buy will help it give customers a more flexible way of using its products. Terms weren't given. More on A6
Red Hat sues SCO, defends Linux
The firm, one of the biggest distributors of the renegade operating system, accuses SCO of "unfair and deceptive" actions. SCO is suing IBM for $3 bil and asking users to pay licensing fees, saying its Unix code was copied into Linux without permission. Red Hat also pledged $1 mil to a fund it's creating to cover legal costs of any customers sued.
** SCO's suit and legal threats won't stop 70% of Linux developers polled by Evans Data from continuing their work. 12% said SCO's actions will affect their plans and 17% had no opinion.
