U.S. May Seek U.N. Help In Iraq
1The U.S. and the U.K. are discussing a new resolution that would give the U.N. more authority in Iraq, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. India, Pakistan and other nations have said they won't send peacekeepers without a broader U.N. mandate. Also, U.S. forces continued to hunt for Saddam Hussein near his hometown Tikrit, and captured three of his former allies.
First Liberian Peacekeepers Land
2Liberians cheered the first wave of West African troops to arrive in the war-torn nation, even as gunfire continued to ring out in the capital. The 198 Nigerian soldiers are part of an initial 850-man battalion, to deploy over two weeks. President Bush's spokesman said the U.S. was "very encouraged." He repeated Bush's call for Liberian President Charles Taylor to leave.
Factory Orders Rose 1.7% In June
3Economists expected a 1.5% rise. New orders for big-ticket durables jumped 2.6%, the best durables gain since last July. Nondurables gained 0.7% after May's 0.6% rise. Factory orders were up 4.8% vs. a year ago. Core capital goods climbed 1.7% vs. May and 8.8% vs. a year ago. Inventories were lean. See Vital Signs on A2
