Dollar Tree Stores Inc. is no stranger to acquisitions, having made a handful the past several years to put it on both U.S. coasts.
But the single-price retailer didn't achieve true national status until June, when it dished out $100 million for Greenbacks Inc.
Greenbacks, which runs 100 single-price stores in 10 Rocky Mountain states, gives Dollar Tree a presence in 47 of the 48 continental states, up from 41 before the buy.
It also gives Dollar Tree an expandable 252,000 square foot distribution center.
"This is a significant acquisition because its enables Dollar Tree to fill in geographic holes in Rocky Mountain states at a price that's quite reasonable," said analyst Mark Mandel of Blaylock & Partners L.P.
Now that Dollar Tree has a stake in almost every U.S. state, the company's next purchase might be a long time coming. If ever.
