Byline: Cord Cooper
1 Thomas Edison was more than an inventor. He was a gifted marketer who sold his products as skillfully as he created them.
Before laboring on an invention, he visualized its aftermarket. When a product was complete, he unleashed a sales campaign worthy of Madison Avenue.
The upshot: He helped launch two of the world's biggest entertainment industries: the recording and motion-picture businesses.
A Gem Of An Idea
Case in point: Edison's spring-motor phonograph, the $10 Gem. Edison knew the device was useless without recordings to play on it, so he set up a multiphase production unit on his 14-building site in West Orange, N.J.
From manufacturing to delivery, he and his teams touched all bases. This removed the need for subcontractors in what quickly became a million-dollar business.
