Verizon strike a chance for rivals
A lengthy walkout could give AT&T and WorldCom a shot at poaching local phone customers in the coveted Northeast. And cable firms such as Cablevision, AOL's Time Warner Cable and Comcast might get an opening in broadband. Verizon faces an Aug. 2 deadline for a new deal with 80,000 workers, a third of its work force.
Cingular eyes NextWave permits
The No. 2 U.S. wireless phone firm said it's in talks to buy some of NextWave Telecom's wireless licenses, but hasn't reached a deal. According to a news release later retracted by NextWave, Cingular Wireless, a joint venture of local phone giants BellSouth and SBC Communications, would buy licenses in 34 markets for $1.4 bil in cash.
New features up cell phone sales
Global handset shipments rose 19% in Q2 to 118.3 mil units, says researchers IDC. Driving the increase are built-in cameras and multimedia, featured in a third of new phones sold. And "smart phone" hybrids, which merge cell phones and PDAs, now make up 1.7% of total shipments ...
