2003 AUG 7 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (WYE), announced the availability of Prempro (conjugated estrogens [CE]/ medroxyprogesterone acetate [MPA] tablets) 0.45 mg/1.5 mg, the company's new low-dose hormone therapy.
Prempro 0.45 mg/1.5 mg has been shown to be as effective as the current standard dose in relieving menopausal symptoms, yet contains 28% less estrogen and 40% less progestin.
"The availability of these new low dose hormone therapy options is good news for women seeking treatment for their moderate to severe menopausal symptoms and who are concerned about protecting against early menopausal bone loss," said Dr. Victoria Kusiak, vice president of global medical affairs and North American medical director for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. "The FDA and other health experts recommend that women who are taking postmenopausal therapy take the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for the individual woman."
Prempro is the most commonly prescribed brand of combination estrogen plus progestin therapy (also known as hormone therapy, or HT). Prempro 0.45 mg/1.5 mg provides an improved bleeding profile and symptom relief comparable to the most frequently prescribed strength of Prempro (0.625 mg/2.5 mg).
